“Sir, I am Mr. Nakul Kumar Rai from Pakur District, Jharkhand. I came to work in Kerala to earn decent wages and take care of my family needs who continue to live in Jharkhand. I reached Palakkad, Kerala, after three days of an arduous journey in a crowded train. As I landed, I lost my memory and could not remember my past. I lost my possessions, and I was wandering in the city. I was attacked by someone and there was a big wound on my leg. The police caught me and admitted me first to a primary health Centre in Palakkad and then to Thrissur Mental Hospital.

After a week I regained my memory and I wanted to call my brother at home. I could reach him. Looking at my pathetic condition, the Police Inspector of Palakkad took pity on me and contacted the Jeevika MOS team in Kozhikode. He narrated to them about my precarious condition. Fr. Renny SJ from Jeevika immediately contacted the mental hospital authorities and visited me the following day. Through his help, I could contact my brother at home. My brother reached the hospital a week later and with the help of Fr. Renny I was discharged from the hospital.

Fr. Renny and Jeevika team did all possible help, especially psychosocial support, and booked tickets for me and my brother to reach our native place. On the third day, I was able to reach home with my brother. My family people and relatives were extremely happy, especially my wife and child. I cried and said aloud, “I am alive again”. It is a rebirth for me in Kerala. I am deeply grateful to Jeevika MOS team especially Fr. Renny for giving me new life”, Mr. Nakul Kumar Rai.

“Jeevika, supported by Caritas Germany and Indian Social Institute has gained public visibility and credibility in reaching out to migrants to reduce their vulnerabilities. I am grateful to the Police Inspector of Palakkad for having faith in Jeevika and helping us to reach out to a migrant in distress”, Fr. Renny SJ.
