In the rural areas of Pulivendula, Andhra Pradesh, students face a unique set of challenges when it comes to getting scholarships for their education. Many students come from an underprivileged background, with limited access to resources and opportunities. Without being sensitive, these students are labelled as “entitled” or “privileged”, by those who do not understand the reality of their situations.
Mr. Vamsi who is pursuing his degree studies at Loyola Degree College, Pulivendula said, “I receive a scholarship from the government that helps me to pay for my educational expenses. However, I had some doubts about the scholarship scheme, such as the disbursement timeline and eligibility criteria. To clarify my doubts, I filed an RTI application. After a few days, I received a response with the necessary information needed”. Overwhelmed with joy and with gratitude, Vamsi thanked the Indian Social Institute Bengaluru, for enabling him with training on RTI. He is motivated and encouraged to support and guide others.
Laxmikala, studying II Year BA said, “I have gained good understanding and knowledge, especially the procedures to access entitlements. It will help me to become a responsible citizen with knowledge and self-confidence. I thank the organisers for giving me this opportunity to attend the training programme.”
It is important to recognize the challenges faced by students from underprivileged communities and support them in their efforts to avail of entitlements, especially scholarships. Through effective capacity-building workshops, we can help these students achieve their dreams and help them build a bright future for themselves and their communities.
The three-day training programme was organized from 17 to 19 March 2023 by the Indian Social Institute, Bangalore in collaboration with Loyola Degree and Polytechnic College, Pulivendula, Backward Community Development Society, Kadapa, People’s Community Development Society, Yerraguntla. There were 45 male and 25 female participants.
