Medical Services to the Migrants at Kaveri Nagar in Bangalore

On 30th Dec 2023 The Indian Social Institute, (Labour Migration Unit) Bangalore in collaboration with St. Philomena’s hospital organized a one-day medical camp for migrant workers at Kaveri Nagar-Mahadev Pura in Bangalore. The medical camp started at 9.40 am and ended at 3.00 pm. Around 178 persons including men, women and children from the localities had medical check-up. They are migrant workers from the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, North Karnataka and Tamil Nadu working in construction sites and Cleaning. Most of the women are domestic workers in Bangalore. St. Philomena’s Medical Team is comprised of three Doctors, three Nurses and one pharmacists coordinated by Sr. Madavi, JMJ. They all had general health check-ups. The doctors team consisted of General physician, Paediatrician and a gynaecologist. Medicines were given free of charge. Sr. Sumi and Mr Ananda Rao from ISI went around the migrant locality alerting the people to come for the medical camp. The local person Mr. Samuel and Self Help Group members 07 of them helped us arranging the venue and bringing people to the camp site.
Health Issues: The following health issues were observed among the people who had health check-up: Cold and Cough, Calcium and Vitamin Deficiency, Adults Skin disease and Diabetes Patients and ulcer. Good number of elderly people were brought to the site to have health check-up.
All those who had health check-up were registered at the site. The medical team is consisted of four components, namely 1. Registration, 2. General check-up, 3. Meeting either the physician or the paediatrician and 4. Distribution of Medicines. During the day the medical team was served coffee and biscuits. After completing the medical camp, the entire team had lunch together. We thanked one another and departed with a sense of joy and contentment in reaching out to the poor and vulnerable migrants, especially the elderly people. We really thank the medical team from St. Philomena’s Hospital for their generosity to spend their precious time meeting the vulnerable migrants at Kaveri Nagar, Bangalore.
