‘Village mapping exercise helped us to understand the real issues of our villages and the discrimination of marginalised families’.
A three-day training program was held in the Villupuram Zone of Tamil Nadu, organized by the Indian Social Institute-Bengaluru, as part of a Capacity Building Training for Rural Youth on the theme “Self and Society.” This impactful workshop engaged 32 young participants, guiding them through an exploration of their identities and roles within their families and communities. This journey not only enhanced their self-awareness and confidence but also nurtured essential leadership skills, inspiring them to take on active, positive roles in their communities.
Kiruba, a young girl from the group, shared her reflections on the challenges in her village, where many boys drop out of school to work. “They feel a strong pressure to contribute financially,” she said, “and they see immediate work as more valuable than school.” Kiruba, motivated by the spirit of the training, feels a deep responsibility toward her community. “Why can’t things be different for us?” she wonders, determined to make a change in her village. She is hopeful that one day her peers will see the value of completing their education.
Another participant, Gokulavanan, described the Self and Society training as a true eye-opener. “Coming into the program, we expected a series of discussions and lectures, but what we experienced was far deeper and more personal,” he shared. Through the training, participants began to see how much our choices and beliefs were shaped by societal expectations. Reflecting in a supportive environment, Gokulavanan said, “I realized how much of my identity was based on others’ opinions, not my own values.” The experience brought him a renewed sense of self-awareness and a commitment to engage with society in ways that truly reflect his authentic self.
The resource person, Mr. Manivelan, led powerful sessions on self-awareness, self-esteem, and leadership. He encouraged participants to think deeply about their identity and potential, posing the question, “What should I become?” This prompted the youth to consider both their present and future lives. Additionally, Mr. Manivelan conducted an insightful session on the community system in India, guiding participants to understand the social structures, traditions, and relationships that shape their communities.
As the facilitator, I was honored to witness the growth of each participant. My role went beyond merely leading; I supported, listened, and created a safe space for open expression. Watching these young people break through personal and social barriers reinforced my belief in the powerful impact of self-exploration in fostering community change. Every step in understanding oneself leads to a ripple effect in transforming society.
