Substance abuse is a growing concern among migrant workers, affecting their health, finances, and family relationships. To address this issue, on 5th March 2024, the Labour Migration Unit of the Indian Social Institute (ISI) Bengaluru, in collaboration with Max Innovation and Solution, conducted an awareness session at Shriram Property Company in Bommenahalli, Bengaluru. A total of 285 migrant workers from Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh attended the session.
Fr. Samir Minj spearheaded the discussion, delivering a powerful message on the dangers of substance abuse. He highlighted its impact on physical and mental health, financial instability, and social relationships. More importantly, he provided practical solutions to break free from addiction and emphasized the importance of making conscious choices to build a healthier future.
The session was highly interactive, with participants openly sharing their struggles with addiction and its effects on their personal and professional lives. Many workers acknowledged how substance abuse had negatively influenced their work performance and family well-being. Fr. Samir assured them that ISI Bengaluru is always ready to help, offering guidance and support for those seeking to overcome addiction. He introduced the Migrant Assistance and Information Network (MAIN) and encouraged workers to reach out for help whenever needed.
Beyond addiction awareness, Fr. Samir emphasized the significance of financial and health security. He urged participants to register for the E-Shram Card and avail themselves of the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Health Card to secure better access to healthcare and government schemes.
The session left a profound impact on the workers, inspiring them to take responsibility for their well-being and strive for a better future. ISI Bengaluru continues its mission to empower migrant workers, ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to lead healthier, more stable lives.
