Saving our environment is crucial for sustaining life on Earth, preserving biodiversity and safeguarding future generations. By protecting natural resources and ecosystems, we ensure a stable climate, clean air, and water for all living beings. Taking up environmental conservation is paramount to mitigating the impacts of climate change and fostering a sustainable planet for present and future inhabitants.

A three-day youth capacity building training was organized from 26th to 28th January 2024, by Social Inclusion & Democracy Unit of Indian Social Institute Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Gulbarga. 25 zealous youth participated  (18 Boys & 07 Girls) in the training to empower themselves and to bring about a dynamic social change in the community. These sessions were more of encouraging interactive discussions, presentations, and practical exercises.

Participant, Ms. Veena said “Dumping wastes and open drainages near schools pose serious health hazards, exposing children to pollutants, diseases, and environmental contamination. Such practices compromise their well-being, hinder their ability to learn in a safe environment and perpetuate environmental degradation. Hence I will bring these issues to the notice of gram panchayat & ensure clean environment.

The youth were told that Gender equality is vital for promoting fairness, justice, and social cohesion. It ensures that all individuals have equal access to opportunities, resources, and rights, regardless of their gender. Embracing gender equality fosters economic growth, strengthens communities, and advances progress towards a more equitable society.

They were also keen to learn on Panchayat Raj which empowers local communities by decentralizing governance, enabling grassroots participation in decision-making and development initiatives at the village level. It fosters democracy, accountability, and equitable distribution of resources, driving inclusive and sustainable rural development.

It was amazing to see how the youth were very much impacted on the issue of Environment. Mr. Arogya Swamy Shared “I want to spread the importance about planting tree saplings in my locality. Planting saplings is a simple yet impactful way to combat climate change and replenish green spaces, contributing to cleaner air and enhanced biodiversity. Each sapling planted represents a commitment to the future health of our planet and the well-being of generations to come”.

The resource person asked the youth to come up with concrete action plan to protect the environment with their small actions in their own communities. As a reply to this, Mr. Yeshappa said, “Drinking water tanks at the village level ensure access to clean and safe water, promoting public health and reducing waterborne diseases. They serve as vital infrastructure for communities, fostering resilience against water scarcity and improving overall quality of life. I will educate my family & my people about the importance of RO Drinking water plant. Regular cleaning of overhead water tank & misusage of precious water”.
