On 1 December, 2023 in a resplendent ceremony that resonated with a commitment to universal values and equality, the 10 day long ‘Human Rights Celebrations 2023’ was inaugurated by many scholars, social activists and vigilant citizens at Indian Social Institute, Bengaluru. To commemorate 75th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December, the event kick started a 10 day long series of events dedicated to promoting awareness about human rights issues and promote a sense of unity and activism among the youth in and around Bengaluru. Chief Guest, Prof Dr K Jaishankar a pioneer in cyber criminology, delivered a keynote speech on “Human Rights in Cyberspace and it’s impact in the Physical Space”. He shared with the youth extensive information on cybersecurity and underscored the importance of cyber safety. The engaging discourse provided attendees with insights into the world of cybercrime.  Ms Kathyayini Chamaraj, a renowned social activist spoke about the injustices prevailing in today’s world. Dr Selvaraj Arulnathan, Director of Indian Social Institute, well versed in Sociology, Philosophy and Theology and author of numerous research papers called on the youth to be the crusaders of Human Rights. He said, today there is a growing need to be conscious of social justice and Human Rights.   

The speakers shared profound insights into the significance of Human Rights Week in fostering awareness, understanding and action towards creating a more just and equitable society. A highlight of the event was a poetry recitation by the students of Acharya College, providing a creative and emotional dimension on Human Rights. The programme ended on a patriotic note with the singing of the national anthem, symbolising unity and commitment to uphold the principles of justice and human rights.

“CELEBRATING RIGHTS” from 1 December to 10 December will witness various events  conducted by youth such as, whatsapp Campaign, Talks/Lectures/Seminars, Film screening, Street Play/Skit, Photography competition, Candle light vigil, debate and Essay writing competition etc

December 4: Youth for Rights of Children and Adolescents: Right to Education, MHPSS (Menstrual Hygiene and Psychological Support) and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and Sex Education

December 5: Youth for Dignity of Farmers and Migrant Labourers (Youth against Climate Change)

December 6: Youth for the rights of Urban Poor: Right to Food, Maternity benefits, Livelihood and Pension

December 7: Youth for Gender Equality: Rights of Women, Transgender and Sexual Minorities

December 8: Youth for Sadbhavana & Constitutional Democracy: Freedom of Religion, Right to dissent, Diversity of Cultures and Languages

December 9: Youth for Change: Citizens as Rights Holders and Employment as Fundamental right (International Anti-corruption Day)

December 10: Youth for Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights Defenders (International Human Rights Day)
